Remove everything, check expiration dates, and wipe down shelving.
Take it all out, check the dates on your food, throw out any food that you know you aren't going to eat and use an all purpose cleaner to wipe down the shelves. ( I probably do this deep clean 4 times a year.)
Group like items together.
You will notice some of the same type of items in your grouping of foods. Most homes have beverages, salad dressings and condiments. Collect them into groups.
Create zones in the Refrigerator.
Where will you keep your most used foods? I have zones for beverages, leftovers, snacks, eggs, salad dressings, sauces, meat, cheese & vegetables.
Contain items and label.
Use containers to create boundaries and contain food. Clear plastic bins (rectangular) are great for containing cheese sticks, yogurts, fruit cups and applesauce pouches. I've recently started using a lazy susan in the top of my fridge to be able to reach things quickly.
Maintain.
The best time to wipe down your fridge is when it's the most empty. For us, it's the day before we go grocery shopping. Bonus, if it's the day before trash day!! Designate a day to throw out any rotten fruit or vegetables.
